Most rug calculators assume a rectangle. Ovals behave differently: they're widest in the middle and pull in toward the ends, which is exactly where the corners of a table or the feet of a sofa sit. So instead of adding inches to your table size, we trace the full area that needs to be on the rug (your table plus room for chairs to slide back, for example) and check it against the real oval shape of each standard size. The result is the smallest oval that covers every point, along with how much rug you'll have at the tightest spot.
Rug sizes are nominal. Two rugs both sold as 8' x 10' can differ by several inches, so check the exact dimensions on the product page against the size the calculator gives you. If you're between sizes, go up for a dining table and down for a tight room.
For a 72 x 40 inch oval table, an 8' x 10' oval gives about 24 inches of rug on every side, which is enough for chairs to slide back. A 7' x 9' fits but leaves only about 18 inches at the ends.
Yes, but it needs to be bigger than you'd expect. The table's corners land where the oval curves in, so a 72 x 38 inch table needs a 9' x 12' oval for 24 inches of clearance. An 8' x 10' leaves only about 15 inches at the corners.
About 24 inches past the table edge on every side, or 30 inches for large or arm chairs. Less than 18 inches and chair legs will catch the rug edge.
