How to Measure for an Oval Rug
Ten minutes with a tape measure now saves a return later. Here is the exact process we use to size an oval rug.

Step 1: Measure the furniture footprint
For dining: measure the table, then add 24 inches on every side. For seating: arrange the furniture, then measure the rectangle that contains the pieces you want on the rug.
Step 2: Tape it out
Use painter's tape to mark the oval's outline on your floor — or tape a rectangle with the rug's length and width, then round the ends mentally. Live with it for a day. Walk around it. Pull chairs out onto it.
Step 3: Check the clearances
Confirm doors still swing, walkways stay open, and at least 12 inches of floor remains between the rug and the walls. Then order the oval that matches your tape.
Frequently asked questions
How are oval rugs measured?
By their full length and width — a 6x9 oval is 6 feet across at its widest and 9 feet long at its longest.
Should I measure in feet or inches?
Measure in inches for accuracy, then convert. Rug sizes are nominal, so an inch or two of difference is normal.
What if my space is between two sizes?
For dining rooms, size up. For living rooms, either works — choose based on how much floor you want to show.
