Oval Rugs for Entryways and Kitchens
By Mike Teofilo · Updated October 2026

Entryways and kitchens are the hardest-working floors in a house. A rug here has to trap dirt, survive spills and stay put, while still fitting under a door that swings over it.
Entryway sizes
Size an entry rug to the door, not the room:
- Standard front door (36 inches wide): a 2' x 3' oval inside the door, or a 3' x 5' oval if the hall is wider.
- Double doors or a wide foyer: a 4' x 6' or 5' x 8' oval, centred on the doors.
- Round foyer table: an oval or round rug larger than the table by 2 feet on each side.
An oval's curved ends help in entryways, because people walk around them rather than tripping on a corner.
Check the door clearance
Before buying any entry rug, measure the gap between the bottom of the door and the floor. The rug, plus any rug pad, has to be thinner than that gap, or the door will catch it every time it opens.
- Flatweaves and braided rugs are usually under half an inch thick.
- Low-pile rugs are usually around a quarter to half an inch.
- Shag and high-pile rugs rarely clear a door.
Product pages on OvalRug list pile height where the retailer gives it. A thin rug pad, around 1/8 inch, keeps the total low.
Kitchen sizes
- In front of the sink: a 2' x 3' oval.
- Galley kitchen: a 2' x 3' or a small oval at each work station. Ovals don't come in runner lengths, so a long galley may suit a runner better.
- Under a kitchen table: see our guide to oval rugs for dining tables.
Materials that handle dirt and spills

Avoid jute near the sink or the front door in wet climates. Water leaves brown marks that don't come out.
Keep it from sliding
Small rugs on hard floors slide, and a sliding rug at the door is a trip hazard. Use a thin rubber or felt-and-rubber pad trimmed to the oval shape. Our rug pad guide covers how to trim one.

FAQ
What size rug for a front door?
A 2' x 3' oval inside a standard 36-inch door, or a 3' x 5' if the entry is wider than the door.
Will a rug fit under my front door?
Measure the gap under the closed door. The rug and pad together must be thinner than the gap. Flatweaves and braided rugs usually clear; shag rarely does.
What is the best oval rug material for a kitchen?
A washable flatweave or polypropylene oval. Both handle spills, and small washable rugs can go in the washing machine.
