Rug Pads for Oval Rugs
By Mike Teofilo · Updated October 2026

Most rug pads are sold as rectangles. Oval rugs need one just as much, so the usual answer is to buy a rectangle and trim it. This guide covers which pad to buy and how to cut it.
Why an oval rug needs a pad
- Stops slipping. Braided rugs and flatweaves in particular slide on hard floors.
- Protects the floor. The pad keeps the rug's backing from scratching wood or tile.
- Makes the rug last. It cuts down the wear from grit grinding against the back of the rug.
- Adds comfort. A cushioned pad makes a thin rug feel thicker.

Avoid cheap PVC or plastic pads on hardwood and vinyl floors. Some can stick to or discolour the floor finish. Look for natural rubber or a pad the maker says is safe for your floor type.
Thickness
- About 1/8 inch: entryways where a door swings over the rug, and under dining tables so chairs slide easily.
- About 1/4 inch: most living rooms and bedrooms.
- 3/8 to 1/2 inch: for extra cushion under a thin rug in a low-traffic room.
If you have heated floors, check that the pad is rated for them.
Size
A pad should be slightly smaller than the rug, so the rug's edge tapers down to the floor and the pad stays hidden. The usual guide is about 1 inch in from the edge all the way around.
Buy a rectangular pad the same size as the oval's length and width, then trim it.
How to trim a pad to an oval
- Lay the rug face down on the floor.
- Lay the pad on top of the rug, centred.
- With a marker, trace around the rug's edge onto the pad.
- Draw a second line about 1 inch inside the first.
- Cut along the inner line with sharp scissors or a utility knife.
- Turn the rug over and place the pad underneath. Check that no pad shows at the edges.
Felt-and-rubber pads cut easily with heavy scissors. Thick felt is easier with a utility knife and a cutting board underneath.
FAQ
Do braided rugs need a rug pad?
Yes. Braided rugs are thin and flexible, so they slide on hard floors. A thin rubber or felt-and-rubber pad holds them in place.
How much smaller should a rug pad be?
About 1 inch smaller than the rug on every side, so the pad stays hidden.
Can you cut a rug pad to fit an oval rug?
Yes. Trace the rug onto the pad, draw a line 1 inch inside, and cut along it.
