What Size Oval Rug for a Living Room?
By Mike Teofilo · Updated October 2026

An oval rug softens a living room full of straight lines: the sofa, the coffee table, the TV. Getting the size right decides whether the room looks pulled together or whether the rug looks like an island floating in front of the sofa.
The three common layouts
1. Coffee table only. The rug sits under the coffee table and stops short of the sofa. This works in small rooms. A 5' x 8' oval under a standard coffee table is typical.
2. Front legs on. The front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug, and the back legs sit on the floor. This is the most popular layout and it ties the seating together.
3. All legs on. Every piece of furniture sits fully on the rug. This needs a large rug, usually 9' x 12' or bigger, and suits large rooms.
The oval catch: sofa ends
Ovals narrow toward their ends, which matters in the front-legs-on layout. A sofa's front legs at each end land where the oval is curving in.
Here is a real example. Take an 84-inch sofa whose front edge is about 30 inches from the centre of the rug. On a 6' x 9' oval, the rug only reaches about 24 inches from centre at the sofa's ends, so the end legs miss the rug. On an 8' x 10' oval, the rug reaches about 36 inches at the same point, and all the front legs land on it.
The rule: for front-legs-on with an oval, choose a rug at least 2 feet longer than your sofa, and check the width at the sofa's ends. Painter's tape on the floor is the quickest way to check.
Size by sofa length
| Sofa length | Coffee table only | Front legs on |
|---|---|---|
| Sofa lengthLoveseat, 60–72" | Coffee table only4' x 6' or 5' x 8' | Front legs on6' x 9' |
| Sofa lengthStandard sofa, 84" | Coffee table only5' x 8' | Front legs on8' x 10' |
| Sofa lengthLarge sofa, 90–96" | Coffee table only6' x 9' | Front legs on8' x 10' or 9' x 12' |
| Sofa lengthSectional | Coffee table only6' x 9' | Front legs on9' x 12' or larger |
These assume a coffee table about 18 inches from the sofa. If your seating sits closer together, you can go down a size.
Leave a border
A rug that runs up to the walls makes a room feel smaller. Leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls on every side. In a room 12 feet wide, that means a rug no wider than 9 feet.
Where an oval works best
- Rooms with curved furniture, such as a round coffee table, curved sofa or barrel chairs.
- Narrow living rooms, where an oval's rounded ends keep walkways clear.
- Seating in the middle of the room, where a rectangle's corners would point at doorways.
Materials for living rooms
Living rooms are where people sit on the floor and children play, so softness matters:
- Wool is soft, durable and naturally resists dirt.
- Braided cotton or jute suits cottage and farmhouse rooms. Jute is coarser underfoot.
- Polypropylene and polyester cost less and are easy to clean, which helps with pets.

FAQ
What size oval rug goes in front of a couch?
For a standard 84-inch sofa, a 5' x 8' oval works under the coffee table alone. If you want the sofa's front legs on the rug, choose an 8' x 10' oval.
Is a 5x8 oval rug too small for a living room?
Under a coffee table in a small room, no. If you want furniture legs on the rug, a 5' x 8' oval is usually too small.
Should the rug be longer than the sofa?
Yes, for any layout where the sofa touches the rug. With an oval, aim for at least 2 feet longer than the sofa so the end legs land on it.
