Oval vs Round Rugs
Round and oval rugs both soften a room's angles, but they behave very differently under furniture. Here is how to choose.
Coverage: oval wins under furniture
A round rug covers a circle — great under a round table in a square room, wasteful almost everywhere else. An oval stretches coverage along the furniture's length, so sofas, beds and rectangular tables sit properly on it.
Flow: ovals guide, rounds anchor
The elongated curve of an oval leads the eye and the feet along a path — ideal in narrow rooms and open plans. A round rug anchors a single point: a reading chair, a foyer, a crib.
Availability and price
Round rugs are common in small accent sizes; ovals dominate the braided and washable categories. For dining and living rooms, oval usually offers more choice at every price.

Frequently asked questions
Is an oval or round rug better under a dining table?
Oval for oval and rectangular tables, round for round tables in square rooms. Match the rug's outline to the table's.
Do round rugs make a room look bigger?
Both shapes can. What matters more is leaving a consistent border of bare floor around whichever shape you choose.
Can I use a round rug in a hallway?
A round rug will not cover a hallway's length — use a runner or a long oval instead.
