The 5x7 oval is the small-space workhorse: big enough to anchor a bistro table or armchair, small enough for apartments and nooks.

A 5x7 oval suits a table for two to four, or a single armchair with a side table.
Leave at least 12-18 inches of bare floor around the rug so the oval shape reads clearly.
Most 5x7 washable rugs fit a home washing machine — a real advantage at this size.
| Setup | Rug size |
|---|---|
| Bistro table for 2 | 5x7 oval |
| Reading chair + side table | 5x7 oval |
| Small seating pair | 5x7 oval |
Very few retailers sell an exact 5x7 oval. Most list this size as 5x8, or as 5'3" x 7'3", so those are the sizes you'll see on the picks below. This page covers that whole size class — anything roughly five feet wide and seven to eight feet long.
Under a small dining table, in a breakfast nook, beside a bed, or under a reading chair — the 5x7 oval defines a zone without overwhelming a compact room.
Because the footprint is modest, this is the size where you can afford to try a bolder pattern or a premium material.
Breakfast nooks, small dining areas, home offices and reading corners — anywhere you want to define a small zone.
Only a compact one. For four chairs that pull out comfortably, a 6x9 oval is usually the safer choice.
If it is labelled washable, yes — a 5x7 fits most standard home washing machines.
